Russian cinema
Festivals and awards are good for an actor’s or director’s image. But the tiny logo on the poster doesn’t have much impact on the film’s success. The reason is still the same: the juries at European festivals, unlike your average carefree moviegoer, respects societal dramas. Russia’s “Kinotavr” helps directors with connections, and deserves thanks for that. National film awards like “Nika” and the “Golden Eagle” are reminiscent of a family Christmas party: every year, the same people show up, and everyone goes home with something. As far as global events go: the Oscars are, of course, fabulous; Cannes is great, but you won’t blow anyone away with an award from there; Berlin and Venice can’t hurt; and the Cesar is only worth it if you’ve got extra space on your shelf. All the other awards are held in lower regard.
